Managing Your Academic Career

Required Advising

Some colleges and departments require their students see an advisor before registration for the next term. The student should contact the appropriate advising area prior to the registration access time.

Academic Advisors are committed to students' academic success and can help with course selection, scheduling, and registration; answer questions regarding University requirements, policies, and procedures; and put them in touch with helpful University resources. Students should schedule an appointment with their advisor whenever they have questions or need assistance meeting their academic goals. One of the most important guides is the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Declaring a Major or Changing a Major

Students whose records are in General Studies are eligible to declare a major when they have 30 earned hours, credit for ENG 1000 and ENG 1100 (or the equivalent) and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. General Studies students are notified of a major declaration period early each semester and are urged to declare during that time if they have decided on a major. Once the student officially declares a major, his or her records are forwarded to the appropriate degree-granting college and he or she will begin working with an advisor in his or her major.

Students who have already declared a major but want to change majors within their degree-granting college should contact the dean's office of that college to complete a change of major form. Students who have already declared a major but want to change to a major in a different degree-granting college should go to the dean's office of the college where the new major is located to complete a change of major form.

Any student planning to officially declare a major or change a major should do so early in the semester in order to have his or her records processed and moved to the appropriate degree-granting college in time to receive advising for the following term. Students who wait until mid-semester to do this frequently will be unable to get an advising appointment with an advisor in their major prior to pre-registration.
