Managing Your Academic Career

Grade Reports

At the end of the semester, students may view and print their grade report from the Student Services menu in AppalNET. After you select the term, you will be able to view posted grades. For the grades listed, earned hours and GPA information will be calculated and reflected.

Academic Standing

Grades are reported at the end of each semester. Students must attain grade point averages according to the hours attempted ranges below in order to remain in academic "good standing" at Appalachian. Please note that attempted hours include both institutional and transfer hours. Cumulative GPAs and when they should be attained are as follows:

After 0-15 Attempted Hours . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1.75
After 16-30 Attempted Hours . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1.90
After 16-30 Attempted Hours (and thereafter) . . . . . 2.00

Students can find information about academic probation and suspension policies.

Incomplete Grades - Updated Policy

Grades of "I" (incomplete) are to be assigned only because of sickness or some other unavoidable cause.

The period of time before a grade of "I" defaults to a grade of "F" or "U" is one semester. This means that a student who is given a grade of "I" for a fall class must remove that grade by the end of the following spring semester or the grade will change to "F" or "U" (depending on the grade type of the course). If the grade of "I" is assigned in the spring or during either summer session, it must be removed by the end of the following fall semester. Summer sessions do not apply for time allowed to remove the grade of "I."

Students do not re-register for a class in which a grade of "I" was earned in order to complete the incomplete. If a student receives a grade of "I" in a class and then re-registers for the class (either with the same or a different professor), the grade of "I" in the first class will default to "F" or "U." If the student does take the class a second time, the initial grade of "F" or "U" can be excluded by using one of the five repeats allowed.

Understanding/Calculating Your GPA

The grade-point average (GPA) is determined by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of quality hours attempted. Quality points and quality hours are derived from courses graded A-F. A course with a grade of "A" would be counted as 4.0 quality points per semester hour. GPA is computed only on the basis of coursework taken at Appalachian.
