How long will the ceremony last?

While it is impossible to tell specifically how long the ceremony will last, please plan for approximately 2 hours.

When should I arrive?

Graduates should arrive an hour prior to the start time of their ceremony..

Where do I go to line up?

Graduate Students will be lined up within the lower concourse of the Convocation Center. Look for the sign indicating your college, for example, College of Education or College of Fine and Applied Arts. This is the area where you will line up.

Is there a dress code?

The commencement ceremony is a formal occasion so please dress accordingly. Please have your have your cap and gown ready to be put on. Please do not put on your hood - it will be put on during the ceremony.

What about graduating with honors - will I get a cord?

The University does not recognize graduate students with specific grade point averages or honors. Some honor societies, such as Alpha Epsilon Lambda and Phi Kappa Phi, give their members honor cords. You are encouraged to wear these cords to the commencement ceremony. We ask that you not wear honor cords that you received as an undergraduate.

How do I get my cap, gown and hood?

You can purchase your cap, gown and hood from the University Bookstore. The phone number is 828-262-3070.

How do I get invitations?

Contact the University Bookstore at 828-262-3070.

When will I get my diploma?

The Graduate School plans to mail diplomas to the student's permanent address (or the address listed on the application if different) in May 2012.

How do I get recognized at the Ceremony?

You will pick up your name card at the ceremony. You will hand the card to the announcer, who will be standing at the beginning of the stage. She will announce your name as you walk across the stage. If you do not receive a card, no worries: index cards will be available to write your name on for the announcer to read. Please let a marshal know that you need an index card.

*If your name is hard to pronounce, you may wish to print a phonetic spelling on the card.

Where do my guests and I park?

Parking information is available online or by contacting the Parking and Traffic Office at 828-262-2878.

Where do I meet my guest after the ceremony?

Please make arrangements to meet your guests in the upper concourse area.

What do I do with my personal items during the ceremony?

We ask that you leave your personal items with your guests since you will not be able to return to the staging area after the ceremony.
