Request to Take Coursework at Another School -- Procedures

To register for classes at another school, you need to do the following:

  1. Obtain a Schedule of Classes from the school you wish to attend and decide what course(s) you will take. Attach a copy of each course you plan to take with your request. If you plan to attend an out-of-state community college or four-year school, you will also need to attach a course description for each course.
  2. Fill out ALL information fields on the "Request to Take Course Work at Another School" which is available at the Registrar's Office, Room 106 of John Thomas Hall or online.
  3. Review the section "University Policies Governing the Transfer of Credit" and sign the request form.
  4. On your completed form, the Registrar's Office will indicate how the courses you have planned will be credited at ASU.

The request is loaded to the Student Information System and is reported to the area maintaining your advising record (General Studies or, if you have declared your major, the degree granting college). They will determine if you are eligible to take the courses.

A notice will be sent to your ASU Box concerning the approval or rejection for each course requested. If approved, a letter will be sent to the visiting school giving you permission to register. You are responsible for asking the other school to send an official transcript to ASU when you complete the course(s). Make the request in the Registrar's Office at the other school. There may be a charge for this service.

Reminders . . .

  • If you're not sure what you will take at another school, list the courses you're considering so you can see how they will be credited at ASU.
  • If you know what credit you need, but aren't sure what the course is called at the other school, ask for assistance at the ASU Registrar's Office, Room 106 John Thomas Hall.
  • If you are trying to get credit for courses at the 3000 level or above, you must get written approval of the departmental chairperson.
  • A student cannot repeat a course at another school in order to remove a low grade earned in a course at Appalachian.
  • Grades do not transfer to Appalachian from other schools; only credit hours transfer. The hours transferred in from another school will not be included in figuring the student's GPA.
  • Students can earn credit for a course taken elsewhere only if they receive a grade of C- or better in that course. Courses in which a student receives a D can transfer in to cover a particular requirement here, but the student will not receive credit hours for the course. Example: if a student takes a course at UNC-Charlotte equivalent to HIS 1101 at ASU and makes a D in that course, the student can transfer the course in to meet Appalachian's core curriculum requirement of HIS 1101, but he/she will receive no credit hours for the course.
